LED automotive bulbs: a really bright idea 10% OFF Home & Garden Bulbs Ad Choices
The existence of LED automotive bulbs may come to a shock to some consumers, since most of us know LEDs (Light Emitting Diodes) as small, low-intensity lights more likely to be used in watches or clock than in auto lamps. But LED lighting technology has progressed steadily these past few decades, and while they aren't as bright as the much-ballyhooed halogen lamps, modern LED automotive light bulbs are more than adequate to serve as replacement lamps for taillights and blinkers, as well as dome lighting. Lighting it up with LED lampsLED bulbs aren't rated for headlight use, as halogen lamps are, but they're excellent for just about every other auto lighting need, inside or outside the car. LED lighting works on a principle somewhat different from the one used in normal and halogen lights. Incandescent lights cause a metal thread to get so hot it glows. LEDs don't use filaments and don't get very hot, so they last a very long time compared to ordinary bulbs. Their light comes from electricity flowing through a special material called a superconductor; the electrons (units of electricity) spit out light without generating much heat. Less heat means less stress on the diode material, so it lasts much longer than an incandescent lamp. The bottom lineSo, you're wondering: how much does an LED light for my auto cost? Well, it depends on what type you buy. For the smaller lamp bulb kits, expect to pay more than $10. Top-notch taillight LED bulbs may run you up to $60. But consider the options: buy one LED lamp now, or five or ten incandescent lamps over the same period an LED bulb will last. Kind of puts the whole price thing in perspective, doesn't it? |
